dating brussel sprouts

Dating is much like a restaurant everybody (everybody=married people) has been raving about. Not only are they raving about the restaurant, they're insisting that YOU SIMPLY MUST TRY the creme brulee. So, you, being a fan of creme brulee, head to the restaurant. The service is so-so, you place your dessert order:
"I'll have the creme brulee."
"Excellent choice," says the waiter.
You wait patiently, mouth watering, for this delicacy. The people at the other tables are enjoying the rich flavor and you can hardly wait. Your waiter comes with your plate, you look down, and what do you find?
Brussel Sprouts!
Puke green, slimy brussel sprouts! And you HATE brussels sprouts. So your friends (the same "everybody" I referred to earlier) tell you:
"You just have to go back. Eventually the waiter brings you creme brulee and it is soooo worth it!"
So you return again and again, always ordering creme brulee, always receiving brussels sprouts. You waste your money. You waste your time. And to make matters worse, you find out that going to this particular restaurant in hopes of creme brulee is a COMMANDMENT!

Usually I like brussel sprouts... perhaps this is the problem....??

PS I totally stole this post from my friend, Andrea!

exasperated

Life gets hard sometimes. Truly. And I think we get caught up in thinking that if "we can just get to the next stage...." things will be great. Things will be all smooth sailing. I think sometimes I fool myself into thinking, "if I just had a family, I would be happy and things would be all worked out". And I know in my heart and in the back of my mind that isn't the case. But i still think it.
I also know that it can be a crutch for me. I think it holds me back. And this is when I get exasperated. I realize I am in this rut and it is hard to pull yourself out of it. That it makes me make some decisions in life that I think "Well, I guess I will have to ____ because I don't have a husband and kids yet.
I find myself in this now.... I have put myself in a situation that is really hard to get out of. I am going to be 33 this year, and I don't have much to show for it. And I need to figure out how to "be a grown up".
So now I am starting down a road that is going to be difficult. So wish me luck.... and lots of prayers.

percus

My sister in law got me reading these books called Percy Jackson and the Olympians. Very cute and charming series. It is a bit like Harry Potter, in that he doesn't know who he really is until a few strange things start happening to him at school. But he is really a lovable character.
Lucky for me/us they are making a movie about the first book Lightening Thief. It comes out the 12th of February.
So if you are looking for a new book to ready, I would suggest these. They are easy reads, and yet intense.
HAPPY READING!

boss

I have a friend, (those of you who know me well, will know exactly who this friend is...) that loves Bruce Springsteen. It is one of the first things that you learn about him. He truly has a passion for Bruce's music. I worked close with this friend for 5 years and have very fond memories of sitting on a couch with music blaring and him hitting the pause button on the CD player to tell me why he liked the song. Great memories.
Bruce was recently honored at the Kennedy Center Honors. (for those of you that don't know what that is- they are awarded annually for lifetime achievement.) This year on of those honorees was Bruce. And I watched and realized that there are more fans out there of Springsteen that feel the same way that my friend does. And I was really moved by this ... passion that was shown during the broadcast of the KCH. So much so- that I asked my friend to send me a list of his "top 12 Bruce songs". In turn, I received a long email detailing why he selected these certain songs, and what they meant to him in his life.

"The magic of Bruce, and why I enjoy his writing so much is his ability to tell
a story without being literal; his ability to sound optimistic in the
pessimistic songs, and vice versa. Each is a mini-movie, yet very few of
them have an actual ending. His music is about friendship, romance….the
search for something more than you have today. It transcends gender,
economic means, cities or hick towns, rock or country, the blues or soul.
He once explained that he “put a lot of people in a lot of cars, with no idea
where they were going”. He sometimes chooses to use androgynous names,
leaving the listener to ponder whether it’s about a relationship with a girl, or
about friendship with a guy – about love nonetheless. Most of the time,
there is no end, leaving its interpretation open and up to you to decide what
can happen."

I have come to love and appreciate Bruce. Maybe not as much as my friend, but I have grown to really dig Springsteen.

soap box

Okay, here is the thing....

I am tired of hearing about Jon and Kate plus 8. Seriously. We know that Jon is a jerk. We know that he is just..... ew. I don't think I can finish that sentence.

But truly, Kate- take some self esteem classes or something. All of this... waaa waaa, I married the wrong guy and now after 8 kids, I know the truth. (not that you aren't to blame, sistah! We all saw you bellowing at him for 5 season on tv!)

But when I am watching coverage of last nights People Choice awards, and YOU are the subject of most of the stories because you decided to "grow your hair out". *cough*... It means that I am tired of seeing your dumb face. Go home, raise your kids. All 8 of them....

Things that I learned in 2009

1. Moving back "home" is a lot harder than it looks.
2. Training with a personal trainer is one of the best things I've ever done. (thanks, Brooke)
3. I can run a 5k.
4. Going brunette is the best hair decision I've made to date.
5. I still love Gilmore Girls
6. Switching to Diet Coke was a huge decision. But the right one.
7. I don't like contacts. And now need to wear glasses while reading and using the computer.
8. Getting a tattoo in Vegas not smart but a lot of fun. Getting it re-inked in SLC=painful.
9. Sometimes it is great to have my dad act like a dad.
10. Still in love with Edward after all these years.
11. I'm ready to go back to school and finish my degree.
12. Using a flat iron isn't as scary as I thought it would be. (I am usually strictly a curling iron gal)
13. 2010 has a lot of promise. Let's go.
